Working in Shifts!

This is the twelfth letter I’ve sent to you, Reader since October last year, and I want to thank you for engaging with my words. The response has been gratifying. You can check out past letters at this link if you would like to take a trip down memory lane.

Act One, in frequency.

There’s no easy way to say this, so I’ll be straightforward. I want to speak to you less - in this format, anyway. Writing these letters every three weeks has been an excellent practice of reflection and amplification for my multidisciplinary practice - which I label under the mantra of Make Create More.

As shifts are occurring in my work, I have decided to send these letters every three months, on the last Tuesday, as a kind of review of the quarter. I will be delighted to have you along as I contemplate and catalog my life as a socially-engaged artist.

We live in a rapidly changing world. There was originally more to that thought, but putting a period on paper seemed more appropriate. These letters are a way of slowing down, looking around, and moving purposefully. Not more, faster, bigger, stronger. I am stronger, but more on that in Act Three.

I am interested in more SIGNIFICANT. But I set the pace.

Act Two, in focus.

The focal length of an optical system is a measure of how strongly the system converges or diverges light. That’s how cinema lenses work. With the proper adjustments, lenses focus on the subject, making the image sharper and more apparent. With all the turmoil I’ve experienced in 2024, life has finally fallen into focus, but only because of my repair and refinement.

All this blabber about focus is my way of acknowledging that my center of attention has been shifting over the last few years, and I am now truly happy to say that Film Unbound has a renewed focus and a clearer sense of purpose. As well as a beautiful new look - if I say so myself.

Film Unbound was formed over a decade ago, but my film practice has sometimes moved into the background. It is now my primary focus. Using participatory filmmaking methods we make mission-driven media with leaders, changemakers, innovators, and academics. The premise is that there are a lot of solutions in the world, and platform-specific media built to reach a priority population is the way to make great ideas a working reality.

You can stay updated with the developments of Film Unbound and the films we are currently working on by signing up for our forthcoming email communications.

Act Three, in the body.

In my previous letter, I alluded to some exciting news, and here it is! Starting in October, I will join a small cohort of teaching artists and movement practitioners in Jacob’s Pillow’s Curriculum in Motion Institute. This is a ten-month program that, in their words, is a…

…career development opportunity for emerging, mid-career, and seasoned choreographers to keep your artistry alive and growing. Each year, we welcome a new cohort of Artist Educators–from diverse dance backgrounds who want to strengthen their choreographic voice with a community-building focus.

A year ago, as I hiked in Colorado, I resolved to address the chronic back pain I have endured since an injury at the age of seventeen led to stepping away from the dance world into theatre-making more broadly. Although movement has woven its way throughout my practice, this certification is a monumental leap in my work as a socially-engaged community artist. And thanks to the right kind of care, I am able to make this shift with confidence in my body.

I will bring movement projects to communities across New Hampshire and beyond through the support of the Curriculum in Motion Institute. Click the button above or reply directly to this email if you want to speak to me about bringing movement to your community.

Have a great summer, and I’ll speak to you on the last Tuesday in September!
